Today, Luxembourg's rural area covers 85% of the country's territory and is characterised by a diverse landscape and a strong regional identity. A total of 79 municipalities and thus more than a third of the population are part of this rural area. Between 2016 and 2023, the rural municipalities in Luxembourg even recorded a population increase from 193,000 to 274,000 inhabitants. This is an increase of 4 per cent of the rural population (2016: 38%; 2023: 42%).
